Rustic Weekend: Homebrew

Remember when Mark was bottling his home brew? I was eagerly waiting for the day when it would be ready to drink.

Well, it tasted fantastic, for a first go! I'm sorry you guys don't get to taste it, but it does taste as good as it looks:

And now that Fall (AKA Autumn) is fully on its way, we're meticulously planning our fall festival activities and stocking up on pumpkin beer and cider that tastes like campfires. Fall (AKA Autumn) is a huge deal here in rural PA, and I'm willing to get on board with anything that involves rustic baking and tasty spiced drinks.

I'd love for Mr to try brewing his own pumpkin beer but unfortunately all the pumpkins he tried to grow went funky and died, so the next keg will likely be basic beer flavor. I'm totally okay with that.

In the spirit of rural American pass-times, I'm also helping Mr with design, photos and content for a beer brewing (and tasting) blog. You can get a sneaky peak here, but I'll let you know when it's launched proper.

Over the next few weeks I'll be posting lots of Fall (AKA Autumn) related posts and activities. What's your favorite thing about Fall? What do you recommend I try out?

  1. My favourite thing about the autumn is that everything gets cozy. The warmer clothes come to the front of the wardrobe and the heating goes back on. The nights draw in so you spend your evenings sitting in the lamp light with the fire on, and a hot bath is much more satisfying when it's cold and dark outside. Even the food I eat gets more hearty and filling. All those things plus the beautiful colours as the trees turn make Autumn my favourite time of year.

    1. Generally I have to admit I prefer summer, but Mr is much more of a Fall person. I do agree that hearty and filling food is the best though!

  2. Going to pumpkin farms and apple orchards are one of my favorite things to do. I'm sure they are in abundance in rural PA! I live halfway between Chicago and Milkwaukee, WI, so I have to do a bit of driving to get to one. But it's well worth it. Also, eat lots of caramel apples and apple cider donuts :)

    1. I've made a calendar with the dates and locations of the local Fall fests. I'm not kidding.

Apple cider donut? Sounds like my three favorite food groups, combined.

    2. (not because we have kids, but because it's still a funny inbetween stage).

  4. I love a good home brew! Alas, I am 6 months pregnant, so I won't be partaking in any (homemade or otherwise) for a few more months--- but seriously an impressive feat! 2 of my brother-in-laws are into home brewing as well.

We are hoping to go apple picking one weekend soon and even if we don't I am sure there will be plenty of apple pies baked in the next few months. I am also getting into the season of things by embracing other fall cooking. Tonight I plan to make an acorn squash risotto to kick things off!

    1. I was genuinely impressed at how drinkable the home brew was!

I'm loving hearing about all these Fall foods - acorn squash risotto sounds fantastic. I could go for that right now.
